11:50 AM, Juvenile Justice Center
John Serbu Youth Campus
2727 MLK Blvd (opposite Autzen Stadium)

A CITY CLUB FIELD TRIP:
Serbu Juvenile Justice Center

  • Lisa Smith, Director, Dept. of Youth Services

Lisa Smith will give us a short course on the workings of a very important part of our justice system. Lane County has – with very special thanks to the late Dr. John Serbu – some of the best facilities in the country for dealing with the part of our offender population that may require the most careful, intense and flexible handling. Every youth in the Department's charge is pointed toward a future of responsible citizenship, a useful skill and a positive sense of self. This is a chance to find out a bit about how Ms. Smith and her staff are doing. She will be introduced by Grace Serbu.

There are two special features to this program. The luncheon itself will be prepared and served by the students engaged in chef Amy VanDyke's culinary arts training program at MLK School.

Following Ms. Smith's presentation, there will be tours of the Serbu Youth Center conducted by various DYS staff members. There will also be the usual Q&A session following Ms. Smith's comments for those who choose to have her further explain what goes on in these rather handsome facilities.

A special note: Since the facility for this program is part of the county's justice system, you will be subjected to a security screening upon entering the building. So, be mindful of what you have in your purse or pocket. (Photo ID may be helpful.)

Our first question will be asked by a student from Pioneer Youth Corps in Veneta.
