What if our entire future together could be distilled to a
single strip of land, three miles long and no more than a few
hundred yards wide? Springfield, Glenwood, University of
Oregon, and Eugene – each has a piece of the strip and each
grapples to relate to the rest of the state via I-5 and with
scores of other species inhabiting the Willamette River.
It's all happening along the Franklin Corridor: bike paths,
railroads, EmX (bus rapid transit), riverfront recreation and
wildlife, the gateway to downtown Springfield, the Glenwood
development district, the Walnut Street node, University of
Oregon's arena and gateway projects, the envisioned gateway
to downtown Eugene, the emerging neighborhood around
the new Federal courthouse, and changes to EWEB's industrial
property.
The current and past presidents of the local American
Institute of Architects chapter, along with a professor of
architecture, will share with us their excitement about this
area and this project. They will also tell us how we can be
involved in the project at an at-large event for City Club
members. (See this page for details.)
Local architect and reliable
curmudgeon Otto Poticha will ask
the first question.
