ARE BOYS IN TROUBLE:
Who's Falling Behind Whom?
- A panel of experts, introduced by Carmen Urbina
Articles in the popular press and a few studies in educational
journals have explored declining test scores, increased dropout
rates and other signs that boys are struggling in almost all
educational environments, regardless of the social, economic,
racial, physical or psychological circumstances involved.
An article in Newsweek, "The Trouble With Boys," brought
the issue to the front of public awareness. It is a hot topic
at school board meetings across the country, in schools of
education north and south, in think tanks east and west and
in public discussions everywhere. There is little dispute about
the data but a lot of argument about what it signifies and
what actions -- if any -- should be taken. Join us as three
well-informed and articulate authorities turn their attention
to the question our President might ask: "Is our boys learning?"
Carmen Urbina, Parent, Family and Community
Coordinator for District 4J and a City Club board member
will introduce the topic and our panelists:
- Dr. Carol W. Metzler, Research Scientist, Oregon
Research Institute
- Dr. Charles Martinez, Vice Provost for Institutional
Equity and Diversity, University of Oregon
- Johnny Lake, Doctoral Candidate, Department of
Educational Leadership, University of Oregon and staff
member at Churchill High School.
Our First Question will be posed by
a student from Jefferson Middle
School.
