EWEB LAND FUTURE:
Citizens as Master Planners

  • Kitty Piercy, Mayor of Eugene

The agenda of the city of Eugene currently calls for the creation of a master plan for the EWEB land. Can everyone in Eugene be a master planner?

One way to find out is to open all decisions from the very beginning with a master-plan design contest. Buying plans that the public – if given the chance – could create for free has become increasingly unpopular and has sometimes resulted in plans that don't get built.

Who designs public space? Citizens or public-private partnerships? Will the land be used for smart growth and economic development, or will the riverfront continue to exist as a natural area and bird refuge?

A design contest could work these questions out cheaply in a inclusive way that would honor Eugene's goals of diversity and environmental stewardship.

Mayor Kitty Piercy has agreed to discuss the EWEB site issues with us.

Almost all of the time will be reserved for questions and answers.
