On April 27, Commissioners Faye Stewart and Pete Sorenson
will discuss the recently enacted Lane County income tax,
the responsibilities of a commissioner to his constituency,
and the future of public safety funding. The tax is a flat 1.1
percent of personal and business income earned in Lane
County. A similar tax was defeated by voters during the most
recent election.
Faye Stewart was one of three commissioners who voted
to enact the tax. He has a long history of dedication to his
district of East Lane County. This has included public service
on a number of boards, such as the Cottage Grove Planning
Commission and the South Lane School District Budget
Committee, and also includes volunteer work with groups
such as Habitat for Humanity.
Pete Sorenson was one of two commissioners who voted
in opposition to the tax on February 21st. Pete serves for the
South Eugene district, and has been a county commissioner
since 1997. He has been and continues to be involved in a
number of Eugene boards and committees, such as the Lane
Community College Board and the Lane County Planning
Commission. Pete was also a City Club founding member.
Jack Roberts, Executive Director of
Lane Metro Partnership, has agreed
to ask the first question.
