Last February, the University of Oregon departed from the
usual and hired business executive Pat Kilkenny as Athletic
Director. Seen by some as a controversial appointee, Kilkenny,
former chairman and chief executive officer of the San Diegobased
Arrowhead General Insurance Agency, attended the
UO but does not have a college degree. Although he has a
history of involvement with college athletics, he's not seen
as a typical administrator of a large intercollegiate athletic
program.
The construction of a new basketball arena is reported to
be a priority for Kilkenny. After several false starts, including
where and how a 12,500-seat sports facility will fit into the
university neighborhood, the UO purchased the Williams
Bakery as the site for the new arena. But with costs estimated
in 2006 to be $170 million, finding more donors with very
deep pockets will be a challenge. Add Eugene's tradition of
citizen and neighborhood involvement in the planning process
and this newcomer to our community has a sizeable job. Meet
the new model of a college athletic director, and hear about
the transition from the business world to academia. Pat
Kilkenny will be introduced by former City Club President
Dave Pompel.
The meeting was coordinated by Pat Skipper.
The first question will be asked by
Eugene City Councilor Alan Zelenka,
who is also chair of the Fairmount
Neighbors Arena Committee.
