RIVER FLOODPLAINS:
A Dynamic Partnership

Rivers are naturally dynamic entities, changing their flows,
channels and levels from month to month and year to year.
Given a chance, their natural floodplains can cool and clean the
water, increase natural growth and wildlife and decrease flooding.
We make use of rivers in our daily lives - not just for fishing and
recreation and as a source of power, but as a factor in the
aggregate industry, a place for homes, to escape and find nature.
And then there are FEMA standards (outdated), flood insurance
rates, waste water, large development sites, and many regulatory
issues.
Prof. Stan Gregory is a nationally known specialist on stream
ecology, channel dynamics and the effect of human activities on
river functions. He has co-authored a study on the history,
development and future of the Willamette River and its
surroundings. He can show us the importance and benefits of
natural river flow and floodplains - and the need for a partnership
with them for the future.
Steve Gordon, barely retired from many years at LCOG, is
a wetlands enthusiast who can point to specific current issues,
conflicts and decisions affecting the use and management of
our local watersheds.
John Sihler coordinated this program.
