EUGENE '08: A Running
Start for the Trials
- Angel Jones, City Manager Pro Tem, Eugene
- Kari Westlund, President and CEO, CVALCO
Between June 27 and July 6, 2008, Hayward Field will host the Olympic trials. All of the athletes who wish to make the teams for the August Olympic Games in Beijing must come and compete. And about 15,000 spectators are expected to attend the trials each day. So where will all these people stay? How will they get around? Will the spectators be only those who can afford tickets? Do we have to worry about terrorism? How much will all of this cost taxpayers? And how can we showcase Eugene, Lane County and Oregon during the trials?
Get the latest scoop from Angel Jones and Kari Westlund. They serve on the Olympic Trials Steering Committee, which has formulated a master plan and oversees subcommittees of 250 volunteers. Kari says the goal is to host the best Olympic trials for track and field ever held.
Angel accepted the position of City Manager Pro Tem in July 2007, and is serving in that capacity until a new City Manager is hired. Kari has served as president and CEO of CVALCO since November 1996.
Our first question will be asked by Sue Jakabosky, Co-chair of Fairmount Neighbors.
