FROHNMAYER: Rally
'Round The Flagship

  • Dave Frohnmayer, President, University of Oregon

Because the University of Oregon receives only one-third the average funding per student of its peer institutions across the nation, something has to change.

So says UO President Dave Frohnmayer. "Spin a wheel and pick a state, large or small, rich or poor, and look at how well they fund their flagship and land grant institutions, compared to other institutions," Frohnmayer recently told the State Board of Higher Education. "But not in Oregon."

At the February 1 meeting of City Club, Frohnmayer will offer his thoughts on this funding discrepancy, present ideas for changes that must take place in Oregon in order for the UO to succeed, and answer your questions.

Program coordinator: Jerry Diethelm

Our first question will be asked by Kitty Piercy, Mayor of city of Eugene.

Proposed Questions:

How much money did the U of O spend to paint a plane to promote the Ducks team?

Why not redirect the $100 million donation from a billionaire who profits from quasi slave labor in Indonesia to fund academics instead? Or is constructing another sports palace to watch people throw a ball around more important than preparing students for the post-Peak Oil, globally warmed world?

Why is the University of Oregon trying to shut down the most ecologically oriented food business on campus when the U of O is claiming to be concerned about the environment (the "Climate Summit" on Jan. 31)? Holy Cow Cafe serves vegetarian food that is mostly organic, locally grown, and has minimal garbage production. This hypocrisy (greenwash) is leading more people to understand that official claims of environmental concern are not sincere.
