DEMOCRATS: Will One of
These Become Our Senator?

  • Pavel Goberman
  • David Loera
  • Jeff Merkley
  • Candy Neville
  • Steve Novick
Democratic Primary Candidates for United States Senate

Come HEAR, SEE and QUESTION these candidates in the second pre-primary presentation of this statewide election. They will tell you why they are running and what they think is important. But most importantly, they will respond to your questions and challenges, for which there will be extra time.

There are potential Oregon issues - such as forest logging and rehabilitation; national issues - such as heath care, economic crisis and the judicial system; and international issues - such as the Middle East and climate change. And the the ultimate issue of what you think of the candidates' qualifications.

Please come and help make our political process work!

Our first question will be chosen from questions submitted by the audience that day.

Gordon Smith has stood with the special interests again and again at the expense of Oregonians.

Smith has voted consistently with George Bush while voting against the environment, choice, and working families.

Re: Comment from David Portert
Part of the present and future economy for China is the massive amount of money we borrow from them right now to fund the war. Our debt to them continues to increase and our future payments including interest will compound the problem. The first thing we can do is stop funding the Chinese economy as we use their money to fund our unprofitable war.
Secondly, Oregon has a many natural resources - particularly timber - that is used for various purposes all over the world - not just as building materials for us here at home. With a world demand for our product, if we do things thoughtfully, Oregon should never experience a slump. As a realtor I see a "green market" that yields high dividends and grows in desirability and value. People pay lots of money for special flooring etc. for all over the world, lots of extra money for green building materials.
We must not view ourselves in antiquated ways - and run our timber economy in a antiquated fashion - we must not allow a handful of mega investors clear cut and run off with our long term profits. Leaving us with property values that plunge and a tourist industry that suffers. We are on the frontier of a very lucrative future IF we do not sell ourselves short. Eco-friendly harvesting insures long-term sustainable income for loggers and the entire timber industry for centuries to come. Clear cut calls for temporary loggers to hop aboard - production to spike - and then to fall, This matters to us Oregonians, but it does not matter to short term investors who take the money and run off to find the next easy profit at the loss of another industry.
In the housing market, we must never allow lenders to lure buyers with short term low interest rates, which later leap up beyond the purchasers ability to pay. Some realtors encouraged people to buy homes on the very outer limits of their ability, only to lose them when those limits were stretched.
Common good sense and good will goes a long way. Affordable health care, mass transportation can keep costs down. We live in one of the richest and most beautiful spots in the world. We must claim a jealous ownership and possessiveness of our state and it's resources. We must protect ourselves and each other from being fleeced by outside interests that do not have our long term interests at heart.
Thank you for your thoughtful question to us all.

Re: John Wallens post:
I am so deeply sorry that your brother is facing foreclosure on his house. I am a realtor and was very mortified at the lending practices of the past year. It is a prime example of cut and run short term investors who set things up to make a quick buck and run off with the profits. The same holds true with clear cutting our forests.
As a candidate, I have sadly discovered that is behind most problems - from outrageous oil prices, outrageous pharmaceutical prices, low wages and regarding health care as a privilege. We successfully join forces to fund our public schools and post offices. Basic health care should fall into that category.
What I will do to never allow this to ever happen again is be vigilant against it. It did not take a real estate license to recognize that the lending practices were shameful, dangerous, detrimental and damaging to the purchasers who trusted their lenders, realtors and the system. We have learned that encouraging buyers to stretch themselves to the limits of their buying ability, gambling on future interests rates and experiencing the crushing anxiety of the system failing us. It is a typical case of if it seems to good to be true - it is.
I do want your brother to know that he is in very good company - there are literally thousands like him. It is not his fault and in the long run will not hurt his credit nearly as badly as if this had happened to him under different circumstances or a different time. My hope is that he did not lose his down payments and that his loan was for close to 100%. If it is early enough in the process, he may be able to arrange a "short sale" with his lender. A realtor would list the property, the lender would have it appraised, and the purchaser could purchase for less than he paid - the lender would take a loss. This does not take quite the hit on his credit that foreclosure does.
The good news is your brother and you have learned a valuable lesson that can put him in exceedingly strong standing in the future - when the next corporate greed rears its head. There is another home in his future, one he can afford, can enjoy and eventually sell at a profit. There is no shame in his predicament. There is an end to his dilemma and there is truly a very bright clean slate of a future before him as he goes forward wiser and shrewder. Again I am very sorry for his disappointment and trauma. He didn't deserve it and this will soon be behind him.

Fewer issues and questions in time for a little more meat on the bones answers. Otherwise, a noteworthy program.

Proposed Questions:

Because of the sub prime mortgage scandals, my brother is facing foreclosure on his house. I want to know if any of these candidates have ever had to deal with this kind of thing and what they will do to prevent this corporate greed from ever happening again in this country.

I suggest all citizens of Eugene to call Mr. Steve Bass, President and General Manager of the OPB (503)293-4000 or (503)244-9900 to broadcast the Debate of Candidates running for US Senator position.

Jeff Merkley and Steve Novick got big money ( a few million dollars) from the Oregon Bankers Association, from lawyers, special interests and etc. Do you think they will help your brother?
I will try to help not him only and but all working people. And I do NOT accept money from no one and will work to "We the People".
But I could do nothing if I will not be elected. The media afraid me and doing everything to block my name. So, you could call the OPB and ask to come and broadcast this debate.

It is a copy I sent to:

City Club of Eugene The Honorable Pavel Goberman - Candidate (D, but
honest) for US Senator FEC ID C00412700
"Stop Political Prostitution!", OR ID # S4OR00065
P.O. Box 1664

REQUEST TO INVITE THE OREGON PUBLIC BROADCAST: 03/01/08

For the public interest the City Club of Eugene is doing a very good job by organizing a Debate / Forum of Candidates Running for US Senator position, which would inform and educate the voters and citizens about candidates.
And my request to City Club of Eugene is to invite the Oregon Public Broadcast (OPB) to broadcast this event.
Not too many people know that the Public Broadcast Service (PBS), including OPB, receives $463 million each year from federal government (taxpayers), plus the OPB receive a few million dollars from State of Oregon, from membership and from huge donations.
And it is an obligation of the OPB for the public interest to pay back to the society: broadcast this debate.
If the OPB refused to broadcast this debate, it would be a conspiracy of the OPB with big private corrupted media, it would be a federal crime, and the OPB must get punished for it and cut off from federal and state funding.
Highly hope that the OPB will serve our community well.

Pavel Goberman

P.S. Copy to the OPB and the public.
P.G.

During the lifetimes of our children, China could develop an economy 2-3 times as large as the US economy. What do you think that means for Oregon's future? What should we be doing now to prepare? And, specifically, should we have more than the current 1% of our students learning Mandarin?
