IMMIGRATION: Welcoming
Change in Rural Oregon
- Marcella Mendoza, Anthropology Professor, UO
Since the 1990s, new immigrants from Latin America have been settling across the United States in unprecedented numbers. Professor Mendoza will discuss the reception these families received in places like rural Oregon, and explain how their lives and their communities have been impacted.
New immigrant women often face unique challenges. Some live in mixed status families where the young children are US citizens but the parents and older siblings have undocumented immigration status. Mothers are sometimes monolingual, with limited formal education and only low-skilled employment opportunities. Professor Mendoza will outline the contributions of these Latino women and their families in the places where they settle, and describe their attempts at successful economic and social integration.
Ms. Mendoza is assistant professor in Anthropology Department at UO, and teaches in the Women's Studies Division.
Our first question will be asked by Carmen Urbina, Parent-Family and Community Coordinator for School District 4J.
