The Mayor serves as the City’s political head and chairperson of the council and is elected by the City at large on a nonpartisan ballot for a four- year term. The Mayor is the formal representative of the City and presides over City Council meetings but has no vote except in the case of a tie. Lucy Vinis is the incumbent. This taped forum presents the seven candidates seeking the office of the Mayor.
Thomas Hiura is a former New York City school teacher and an independent journalist, hip hop musician, film maker, and author, who received the 2011 Eugene Area Chamber of Commerce Future First Citizen Award and the Bill Gates Millennium Scholarship. They have served as a legislative intern with Planned Parenthood Advocates of Oregon and the Oregon League of Conservation Voters.
Benjamin Ricker is an artist and stay-at-home father, who stays informed by attending Monday meetings of the Eugene City Council.
Lucy Vinis (incumbent elected in 2016) came to the office of mayor after serving as Development Director of ShelterCare, a private not-for-profit human services agency offering a wide range of housing and support services for individuals and families who are homeless or on the verge of homelessness. Her record of public and volunteer service includes membership on many local committees and commissions.
Joel Korin, Past President of City Club, will moderate this program. Candidates were allotted equal time for presentations and asked the same questions.
